Learn to play Online Slots – Coin size vs Coins Bet
Over the next few weeks we’ll be holding an online slots training course for all you new players out there. Up first is an explanation of how Coin Size and Coin Bet differ and how it influences your online slots game play. So without further ado, here’s Coin Size vs. Coin Bets…
One of the most important things to understand when playing slots is the difference between coin size and coins bet. But why?

In the above Diagram, the red indicates a coin size of 1 casino credit (we’ll use $’s from here on in for simplicity’s sake), whereas the blue indicates that 3 coins have been bet. These can be changed by clicking the plus/minus signs, and the “bet One” buttons respectively.
The number of coins bet is used to determine 1 of 2 things, depending on the slot being played. If a single line slot is being played, such as above, then the coins bet will determine which paytable is being used. (The red, green or yellow columns above) If a multiline slot is being played, the coins bet will determine how many paylines are active (more on this later).
The coin size is used to determine how much the player will get paid.
Before we start with an example, it is important to note that slot paytables always quote prizes in coins, not casino credits or Dollars! (EXCEPT for Progressive Jackpots)
Eg. In the above game, if a player bet 3 coins of $1, and 3 lemons hit the middle line, how much would get paid?
First, we need to look at the number of coins bet. As we have bet 3, the third payline on the table will be activated. (This will be highlighted on the screen – yellow here). In this case, 30 coins will be paid. Next, we need to look at the coin size, and multiply this by the coins won. You can always use this formula to calculate slots winnings:
COIN SIZE x COINS WON = PAYOUT
Thus, $1 x 30 coins = $30
A common mistake for players here is to think that as they bet a total of $3 on this spin, that they should multiply the 30 coins by $3 instead of one, thus leading them to believe that they should have won $90 instead of $30.
Q 1 - In the above game (Fruit Slots), what would a player get paid if his coin size was 25c, and he had bet 2 coins, and 3 lemons hit the middle line? A 1 - $5 2 coins were bet. Thus second paytable is activated. 3 lemons pay 20 coins As each coin is 25c, 20 x 0.25 = $5
