It is time for a change in attitude towards Online Casinos...
I’ve just finished reading an article in the Nevada Appeal by a former gaming regulator (a Mr Guy W. Farmer) who is dead set against Congress legalising internet gambling and poker and I must say I am very surprised by his attitude.
Mr Farmer, as a gaming regulator during the 60’s (you admitted to working under the Sawyer administration between 1963 & 1967 in your article) you were part of one of the biggest growth periods in Nevada’s Gambling history. This growth was primarily due to changes in the legal system, but it was also helped by the relaxing attitudes towards gambling that were prevalent at the time. You helped to fuel a growth in the casino industry that helped to make Nevada what it is today – a gambling Mecca!
Mr Farmer, because of your background, I cannot see what your issue with online gambling is. If it is simply because you are worried about “unregulated casino growth” then you simply need to look at forward thinking countries like the UK and Canada to see that the days of unregulated fly-by-night casino operators are long gone. Regulation of the online casino environment works, it brings in additional tax $’s and if implemented properly it retains the business within the state (or town) and allows for people to be “trained up”. This gives local communities the opportunity to broaden their employment horizons thanks to the new skills learned.
Mr Farmer, times are changing and America needs to keep up with these changes. Isolationism and Prohibition did not work in the early 1900’s and it is most certainly not going to work in the more open minded 2000’s. Nevada needs to grasp the reins of the online gambling animal and tame it. You have been groundbreakers before and I am sure as a State Nevada will be at the forefront of change again.
Regards Justin
